Grade 5

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders learn how humans shape the world around them.
Fifth graders learn how humans shape the world around them.

Students in fifth grade become aware that humans shape history, and that historical events change human culture. The main lesson takes students from stories of ancient peoples to the formal study of world history, beginning with the mythology of ancient Egypt, India, Babylonia, and Persia, and culminating in the written records of ancient Greece.

In science, students study botany by observation, creating textbook-quality botanical drawings. The level of detail and craftsmanship that goes into each work helps students internalize the scientific vocabulary and information.

In math students continue working with fractions and move into decimals. Spanish studies have progressed so that by the end of the fifth grade students can compose sentences. Handwork and art reflect the growth of these skills through the time periods studies in fifth grade history. Physical education becomes more competitive as students prepare to join team sports in the middle school.

One of the most memorable experiences of the fifth grade year is the Greek Olympiad. WSB students meet with students from other Waldorf schools for this annual competition. The ceremony begins with a traditional torch lighting, followed by athletic competition in discus, javelin throwing, foot races, and Greek wrestling. Through participation in the Olympiad, the study of Greek history comes alive.
