Executive Director Search

As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, we are looking for a new leader to usher us into our next 50 years.

Last Spring, our current Executive Director, Pat Whitehead, let us know of her plans to retire at the end of this 2021-2022 school year after eight fruitful years in that role and over twenty years associated with our community. Tenderly, we began a widespread search for a replacement, facilitated by our consultant, Brooke Carroll, attracting candidates from multiple states and a variety of backgrounds.

New Executive Director Announcement

We are happy to announce that the Board has approved the selection of Brenda Wolf Smith to be the next Executive Director of WSB effective July 1, 2022! .

About Brenda Wolfe Smith:

Brenda comes to this role as a lifelong Waldorf person, having grown up on the campus of Camphill Special Schools, attended the Kimberton Waldorf School, and being associated with WSB in various roles for the past 14 years. Many of you know Brenda as the class teacher of the current 5th grade and for her creative involvement with various school activities such as festivals, talent shows, fashion show, and others. She is a collaborator and a community builder who seeks to work productively across all ventures

She previously worked as an administrator and teacher in the WSB high school, prior to becoming a class teacher for several cycles in the grades. Behind the scenes, she is a Collegium member and a recent past Board member, and is noted for her deep understanding of anthroposophy and her ability to help relate and discuss its tenets with others. Outside of school, Brenda has run a successful restaurant with her husband, Jeff, and has been actively involved with leadership roles in her community. Brenda and Jeff have two daughters who have attended WSB, Gertie and Fern.

Our process to select the next Executive Director began in May with the creation of a Search Committee comprised of current and former Board members and an Advisory Committee comprised of a variety of WSB constituents. We gathered inputs from the community on desired characteristics of the next ED and drew on those to create a role description that was widely posted in July. Our consultant spoke with candidates throughout the summer and we conducted first interviews in late September followed by second interviews in mid-October. Ultimately, two finalists visited campus for a day and a half each of interviews and meetings with faculty, staff, and members of our community.

The search examined carefully the desired characteristics of leadership and community building along with an understanding of Waldorf philosophy and pedagogy, comparing internal and external candidates. We are happy to go forward with Brenda as a person who so thoroughly understands the Waldorf context applied to this leadership role.

Over the coming months, Brenda and Pat will have the fortunate opportunity to begin a process of learning and preparation, leading to the ED transition in July. There will be an opportunity for the community to more formally meet and hear from Brenda during second semester, and we look forward to celebrating Pat and her many accomplishments before the end of her tenure.
