Self Portrait Project — Grete

Self Portrait Project — Grete: Photo Book

My project is this book. I bound it myself and then made the cover for it, which you see here. The book contains photos of different landscapes and textures of places I visited over the summer of 2020. I started my project by figuring out which photos I wanted to put in the book and ordering them off of a photo printing website. Once those came in the mail, I took a sketchbook and laid all the photos out the way I wanted them in the book. After that, I took some brown paper from another sketchbook and glued all the photos in from my mockup and did all of the writing and drawing I needed to do. After that, I bound the book I was going to put all the pre-made pages in. I then glued them all into the book. Then I made the cover. I cut three pieces of Masonite into the sizes I needed and then I taped them together with duct tape. (Masonite is a sort of cardboard-wood hybrid) After that, I covered it in fabric. The fabric is inspired by some old fabric my mom has. After I put the fabric on the cover, I glued in the book portion of my project. I then did my finishing touches on the front of the cover, such as the mushroom with the lace around it. I think one of my favorite parts of making this project was doing the cover. I’m really proud of the way it turned out. Some of the pictures inside it include underwater photos, a couple of photos of a salamander, and some pictures of the desert floor of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. My main inspiration for this project was that I wanted to do something that was personal to me and something I enjoy doing. I love photography and want to pursue it in the future. I think this book will be a really nice milestone for me to look back on and see how I’ve improved over time.
