Self Portrait Project — Sarah B.: Dance

For my 8th grade self-portrait project, I filmed myself dancing a few routines that I choreographed. I also made a collage of pictures of me dancing or after a recital. I chose to do this because dance is a huge part of my life. I’ve been dancing since I was about 3 years old and my sister started dancing before I did because I was too young, but I would always watch her and her class through the window of the door. And every year I participated in a dance recital. I knew that I wanted to choreograph and film myself dancing because dance has a huge impact on my life and has helped me be who I am today. I’ve also never really choreographed a dance before, so I knew it was achievable but would still challenge me. At first, I was just going to film myself dancing, but I decided that it would also be interesting to compare and bring back memories from over the years and at the end of each recital we always take pictures of me with flowers or a trophy. It challenged me to choreograph the dances because, like I said, I’ve never choreographed my own dance before. And even though I know hundreds of different dance steps, figuring out which ones would flow together well but also go well with the music was definitely a challenge as well as knowing how much to push myself with the movements. I enjoyed this project because I love dancing and always have, but it was something new with choreographing it and not just learning the steps. It was also fun to go through old pictures and choose the ones I wanted to use and arrange them into a big collage.
