Middle School

In the middle school years the intellectual capacities of the developing student begin to broaden and become more focused. The content and quantity of subjects expand significantly. New perceptions about the world are introduced. Myths and stories metamorphose into the study of civilizations, from ancient history through modern history and current events. The scope of research intensifies in preparation for entry into high school. The experimental, hands-on approach continues to be the basic form on study. This helps students develop a feeling for the process of discovery that is the true basis for a life-long love of learning
Music
Music features prominently in the life of our Middle School students. We consider music to be an academic subject that affects all areas of their growth and development. Our educators aim to help students find the link between different styles of music and learn how the past affects the present and influences the future.
The Arts
Even as the academic work becomes more intense, the integration of the arts into the life of the class continues. Students have the opportunity to participate in ensemble work. Movement (Eurythmy), painting, and drawing continue to be important elements of the curriculum, and team sports become part of the life of the school. Students regularly perform community service project, participate in overnight school camping trips, and are further introduced to the rich cultural life of the Baltimore area.
Sports
Through sports we them the value of sportsmanship, cooperation, and respect for others. With our various physical education programs and sports team, we partner with parents, coaches, and teaching staff to help our students to grow in virtue, discover their love for movement, and develop their full physical potential.
Academics
As they increase their capability for complex, abstract thought, middle school students are introduced to algebra, Euclidian geometry, physics, inorganic and organic chemistry, and anatomy and physiology. Students progress from the process of observation to using exact measurement to analysis to gain a deeper understanding what they have observed.
Readings and discussions of issues of law, societal conflicts, and the evolution of civilizations deepens an understanding of the relationships among people, cultures, and ideas. Concepts of ethics and community continue to develop as students explore biographies of individuals who have faced the challenges of their times and made a difference in the world.
By the the end of Grade 8, our students have developed into well-rounded young people, fill of confidence and a zest for learning. They have a foundation that will serve them well as they further their educational careers and enter the wider community. The intellectual, emotional and practical pillars upon which the school rests will support the students, helping them become the human beings who will not only be able to meet the future, but to help shape it for themselves and for their fellow human beings.
